Carlton A. Hilliard, Ret. Army CW4
   
Carlton Alexander Hilliard, age 78, of Moorefield, WV, passed this life on Monday, December 13, 2010,  at the
VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. Born in Moorefield, WV, on August 27, 1932, he was the son of the late
Hezekiah Hilliard and Georgianna Duffy Hilliard. He was preceded in death by one sister, Justine, and two
brothers, Randolph and Elwood.
    Carlton was a retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer 4. He retired after having served for 27 and a half
years. He was a member of the Forty and Eight, past Commander of both American Legion Post #64 and VFW
Post #9606, and the Moorefield Town Council. Carlton received a business administration degree from
Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii. Also, Carlton was a member of the Moorefield Lion’s Club, Love
Memorial Clinic Board of Directors, Region 8 Board of Directors, Hardy County Committee on Aging Board of
Directors, PVTA Board of Directors, and Sanders School Club where he served as President. He taught at
Sanders School, and coached basketball prior to his military career; after retirement, was a substitute teacher
in Hardy County. Carlton was also inducted into the All Black Schools Sports Academic Hall of Fame in
Charleston, WV. He was also Chairman of the Black History Awareness Committee for Heritage Weekend.
Carlton is survived his wife, Evelyn Royal Hilliard of Moorefield, two sons, C.A. Hilliard, Jr., and Conway Hilliard
and his wife Volet, all of Moorefield, his sister, Mary Redman, and his brother David Hilliard, both of Moorefield,
WV. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Ta-Yare, Michael Scott, and Trey.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Friday, December 17, 2010, at Elmore Funeral
Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 11 AM at the funeral home with
Pastor Rebecca Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield, WV, with graveside
rites performed by the US Army Military Honor Guard and Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Foundation of America. Arrangements are under the
direction of the Elmore Funeral Home.
